Pairie Lanes Sand Volleyball Rules

Summer League

  1. Team Composition
A team may consist of one of the following:
    • Four Players
      • Men's: 4 male players with a maximum of 4 substitutes (May play with 3 players).
      • Women's: 4 female players with a maximum of 4 substitutes. (May play with 3 players)
    • Six Players
      • Mixed: 6 players with 2 players being of the opposite sex with a maximum of 4 substitutes. (May play with 5 players with 2 players being of the opposite sex)
      • Co-Ed: 6 players with 3 males and 3 females with a maximum of 6 substitutes. (May play with 5 players with 2 players being of the opposite sex)
All competitions must involve teams with the required number of players. Teams with fewer than the required number of players are incomplete and will forfeit the game or match.
  2. Players
    • Participants must behave respectfully and courteously in the spirit of fair play, not only toward the officials, but also toward teammates, opponents, and spectators.
    • Participants must refrain from actions or attitudes aimed at influencing the decisions of the referee.
    • Participants must accept the referees' calls with sportsmanlike conduct and without dispute. In case of doubt, clarifications may be requested. After clarification the referees' decision is final.
    • Communication between members of opposite teams is permitted within the spirit of fair play and sportsmanlike conduct.
  3. Scoring System
    • Teams will play three games each week.
    • Games will be scored in rally format where there is a point awarded on every serve regardless of the team that is serving.
    • The team that scores 21 points, with a two-point advantage, wins the game. If tied, play will continue until a two-point advantage is reached, or until the first team reaches 25 points.
    • In case of a bye, no wins or losses will be awarded.
    • Standings will be based on a win-loss record percentage.
    • In the case of a tie in the standings, teams will be placed in order based on total game points won.
    • In the case of a tie with game points, a one game playoff will determine the standings.
    • The league will consist of 11 regular season weeks. Week 12 will be the first week of single elimination playoffs for the bottom 4 teams. The last 3 weeks of the season (weeks 13-15) will be single elimination for the remaining 8 teams. Everyone will make the playoffs and have a chance at the championship.
    • All teams eliminated from the playoffs will still continue to play every week.
  4. Preperation for the Match
    • Teams will have a 5-minute warm-up period before the start of their first game, which will begin at the end of the previous match, or 5 minutes before your scheduled match.
    • After the warm-up period is finished, a coin toss will be conducted. The winner of the coin toss will choose either to serve or which side of the court they would like to start on. The other team will choose the remainder.
    • Teams that are not present within 10 minutes of their start time will result in a forfeiture of the match.
  5. Substitutions (subs CANNOT be from the SAME League)
    • Unlimited substitutes are allowed as long as one player does not occupy more than one position in the service order during a single game.
    • If a player becomes injured, a substitute on the roster may replace that player. If no substitute is available, a player not on the roster may come in play only if the legal line-up will be breached.
  6. Players' Positions
    • At the moment the ball is contacted by the server, all members of both teams must be in their positions.
    • After the ball is contacted, players may move from their positions.
    • When the receiving team has gained the right to serve, that team's players must rotate one position clockwise.
    • If a violation of position or rotation occurs at the time of serve, the team in violation will lose the right of service. After the violation is penalized, teams will return to their correct positions.
  7. Playing the Ball
    • Each team is entitled to a maximum of 3 contacts to return the ball to the opponents.
    • These contacts of a team include not only intentional but also unintentional contacts with the ball by a player.
    • Blocking does not constitute as a team contact, and any player may make the first contact of the ball after the block.
    • A player may not contact the ball consecutively except during or after blocking.
    • When two non-blocking teammates touch the ball simultaneously, it is considered one contact, and any player may make the next contact.
    • If two opponents simultaneously contact the ball over the net, the ball remains in play, and the team receiving the ball is entitled to another three contacts. If the ball lands out, it is the fault of the team that makes the last contact.
    • Any and all parts of the body are allowed to cross the centerline as long as there is no interference with the opposing player.
    • A player is not permitted to take support from a teammate or any object in order to reach the ball.
    • On the serve, a player may use a two hand closed fist bump to deliver the ball. A setting action may also be used only in the men’s league.
    • The ball must be contacted cleanly and not held, lifted, pushed, caught, carried, or thrown. The ball cannot roll or come to rest on any part of a player’s body.
    • A player may play the ball with any part of their body
    • A player may touch the ball on the opposite side of the net, only after the player attempting to return it has made contact.
    • Attacking the serve is not allowed in Co-Ed or Mixed competitions.
    • Sex rules are in effect for both Co-Ed and Mixed leagues. This means if a team does not hit the ball over the net on the serve, then a member of the opposite sex must make contact with the ball before it is sent back over the net.
  8. Faults at Playing the Ball
    • A team makes contact with the ball four times before returning it to the opponents.
    • A player takes support from a teammate or any object in order to reach the ball.
    • A player contacts the ball twice in succession or the ball contacts various parts of the player’s body successively.
    • A player does not contact the ball cleanly.
    • Any foul committed will result in loss of serve or a point being awarded to the opposing team.
  9. Make-ups
    • Make-up of matches must be scheduled between both teams on a date and time agreed by all three parties (Ref, 2 teams). Make-ups must be completed before the position night of that round. Any make-ups not completed in time will result in a tie for both teams. (NO points will be awarded to either team).
    • Matches postponed due to inclement weather will be scheduled during one of the make-up periods at the end of the regular season. If an entire night is rained out, the schedule will be adjusted to make-up that week, if possible.
    • Decisions to cancel a match or night due to inclement weather will be made by Prairie Lanes no later than a ½ hour before the match is to begin. Cancellations will be announced on our website in the news blast area, and by phone calls to the team captains.
